A CAPstone Experience
Students in GBP spend the year studying changes throughout the history of greater Boston, but by the end of the year we ask them to become agents of change by participating in a capstone experience, the Community Action Project (CAP). Starting in January, students begin brainstorming issues and researching plans of action to enact positive change on a problem of their choosing. Throughout the second half of the year, collaborative teams work to tweak and follow through with these plans to produce something of valuable in their community or that of another one in the Boston area. By the final term of their high school career GBP students are fully immersed in a true project-based learning environment that challenges them to think critically and work creatively towards success. The task at hand requires students to use all of the skills they have exercised throughout the year; their assessment lies more in their approach to and use of those skills in working on the project than in their final product, though of course the final products are often exciting and inspiring!
